This curry is a go-to recipe for those who enjoy the savory, umami-rich taste of dried sardine fish, which, when simmered in a spicy, tamarind-based gravy, creates a dish full of flavor.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup Mathi Meen Karuvadu (Dried Sardine Fish - Pre-Cleaned & Cut)
- 2 tbsp oil (preferably coconut oil or any cooking oil of choice)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust to spice preference)
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1-2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tbsp tamarind paste (or soaked tamarind pulp, as per preference)
- 1-2 tbsp Ceafuds Thoothukudi Fish Curry Masala Powder (for added depth of flavor)
- 1 tsp cumin seeds (optional)
- Curry leaves, a few sprigs
- Salt, to taste
- Water, about 2 cups (adjust based on desired consistency)
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Instructions:
Soak the Dry Sardines:
- Soak the Mathi Meen Karuvadu in warm water for 10-15 minutes to rehydrate and remove excess salt. Drain well and set aside.
Sauté the Spices:
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add cumin seeds (optional) and allow them to splutter.
- Add green chilies and curry leaves. Sauté for a minute to release their fragrance.
- Add onions and sauté until golden brown.
Prepare the Spice Base:
- Add ginger-garlic paste to the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
- Stir in turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and the Ceafuds Thoothukudi Fish Curry Masala Powder. Sauté for a minute, allowing the spices to release their aroma.
Cook Tomatoes:
- Add chopped tomatoes and cook until soft and mushy, releasing their juices.
Simmer the Curry:
- Add the soaked and drained Mathi Meen Karuvadu to the pan and stir well to coat the fish in the spices. Let it cook for 4-5 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse into the fish.
- Stir in tamarind paste (or soaked tamarind pulp) and salt. Mix well.
- Add about 2 cups of water (or more depending on your preferred gravy consistency). Bring it to a simmer, cooking for 15-20 minutes, allowing the fish to absorb all the flavors of the curry base.
Once the curry has thickened and the fish is tender, adjust the salt and tanginess to your taste. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves for a burst of color and freshness.
Serve the Mathi Meen Karuvadu Kulambu hot with steamed rice, idly, dosa or chapati. The rich, spicy, and tangy flavors of the dried sardine curry are sure to make it a memorable meal.
Cooking Tips:
- Soaking the dried fish: Soaking is important to soften the fish and reduce excess salt. If you prefer, you can also rinse the fish under running water before soaking.
- Spice Adjustments: The use of Ceafuds Thoothukudi Fish Curry Masala Powder will elevate the curry, but feel free to adjust the amount based on your spice tolerance.
-
Tamarind: Adjust the amount of tamarind based on how tangy you want the curry. Fresh tamarind pulp gives a richer taste than paste.
Mathi Meen Karuvadu Kulambu is a traditional Tamil dish that brings the authentic taste of coastal cuisine to your kitchen. Whether you’re using it for a hearty curry, a spicy pickle, or crispy fried sardines, this dried fish packs a punch with its rich, umami flavor, making every meal special.
